April 2008 Issue:

Welcome to bona-fide Springtime! We've selected some excellent new products to enhance the change of the seasons. As lovers of fine foods, we seek to share and support small artisan producers of delicious foods. In some cases, this means recognizing our local talent, such as Theo Chocolates, Salumi Cured Meats and our newest local vendor, Whidbey Island's Lavender Wind Farm. In other cases, we acknowledge the skill and tradition of European classics such as Proscuitto di Parma, Serrano Ham and rich Gouda cheese. As we expand our selection of locally-produced goods, we also deepen our offerings from the Old World. Visit us to see what's new and stay for a cup of soup, grilled panino, glass of wine or nibble of cheese!

New Arrivals from the Northwest

Now Serving: Seattle's Own Morning Glory Chai

Bella Cosa Foods is proud to announce we are carrying Seattle-made Morning Glory Chai - a wholesome, authentically brewed chai tea with natural herbs in our espresso bar. In addition to serving this fine beverage, we also offer retail Morning Glory Chai concentrate in 1/2 gallon jars.

New Offerings from Lavender Wind Farm

After hearing tales of a wonderful mythic Olde English Lavender Whiskey Mustard Sauce from Whidbey Island, we got in touch with Lavender Wind Farm. This local USDA Certified Organic farm makes an exceptional tangy treat for mustards and lavender lovers. Olde English Lavender Whiskey Mustard Sauce is wonderful on hamburgers, hot dogs, or in salads. We also received a lovely medley WA state-grown Herbs de Provence for your cooking passions, as well as a soothing Lavender Spirit loose tea. In addition, we've brought in some All-Flower Honey from the Farm. We are proud to offer these top-quality, hand-crafted, locally made products.

New Arrivals from Europe

Matiz Extremeño Fig Bread

A lovely dense bread, made with figs, walnuts, honey and natural spices, is made to go with cheese. Figs have so much to offer as culinary treats: they are nutritious and lend a great chewy/crunchy texture. It is a wholesome, satisfying snack and cheese accent.

Truffle Pasta - La Romagna's Stringozzi al Tartufo

This fine artisan Italian durum wheat pasta is enhanced with summer truffles and porcini mushrooms. Cut into beautiful thick-capellini style Stringozzi, it makes a stunning appetizer or light meal. Excellent when tossed with seafood and pecorino cheese.

New Cheese! Rembrandt Aged Gouda

At long last, it has arrived - 1-year aged Rembrandt Gouda from Holland! Its soft yet crumbling texture is accented by a smooth, nutty flavor. A delicious nibbling cheese, it pairs well with apples and pears, white wine and ales of all types. Try some today!

Bertagni Pumpkin Ravioli

Back by popular demand! We adore Bertagni fresh pastas, made by hand with love from Italy's oldest filled pasta maker. This month our standard flavors of Gorgonzola Walnut Ravioli, Tomato, Basil & Mozzarella Ravioli, Porcini Tortellini and Parmesan-Ricotta Tortellini are joined by a fall & spring seasonal favorite: Pumpkin Ravioli! With its sweet and hearty flavors, this pasta is a simple and elegant treat for dinner.

Wine News

This month we are featuring a new wine from the Jumilla region of Spain.

Bodegas Bleda 2005 Roblemar
55% Monastrell, 45% Tempranillo

Welcome to Southeast Spain! A perfect example of the style of wine coming out of Jumilla, the Roblemar features a dusty bouquet of ripe black cherries and plums, and a fruit forward palate with notes of white pepper, and cinnamon.  With a lasting finish of fleshy fruit and persistent tannins, this well-structured wine is sure to please all!  $11.95

For additional information on Jumilla, this fascinating wine growing region:

Located in Southeastern Spain and often overlooked for its more famous cousins, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Priorat, the wine region of Jumilla has become known for red wines of extraordinary value and reminiscent of those of Southern France - bright, spicy, plump, and bursting with sweet fruit.  Since the early 1990s when the region successfully rebounded from a late attack of phylloxera (a tiny insect that feeds on the roots of grapevines, and killed off most of Europe's native grape varietals in the late 19th Century), Jumilla's international recognition as a major wine producing area has continued to rise.  Replanting the area after the devastation caused by the phylloxera was expensive and time consuming, though the effort proved beneficial as the Spanish native grape Monastrell (known in France as Mourvedre) was more widely planted (over 80% of the vineyard lands), and new, foreign varietals were introduced - the ever popular Merlot and Syrah.  The enthusiasm and excitement caused by the fresh start in Jumilla's wine industry resulted in the production and fame of not only luscious red wines, but also naturally sweet wines, bright and clean whites, dessert wines, and currently rising in popularity: refreshing and fruity roses made from Monastrell.  Be sure you try the wines of Jumilla before their price catches up with their quality!
